Their livelihood was precarious until Flik, an ant inventor prone to incompetence, recruited them as warriors. Upon arrival, a welcome ceremony revealed their mutual misunderstanding: the ants saw saviors, while the bugs saw a talent agent. After fleeing a nearby bird that threatened Dot, Princess Atta's younger sister, they gained the colony's respect and agreed to maintain the ruse of being fighters at Flik's request. Their dynamic shifted when Hopper reminded his gang of the ants' superior numbers, prompting Flik to build a crude ornithopter disguised as a bird. The group's cover was blown by their former supervisor, P.T. Flea, who arrived seeking to rehire them. Despite being driven away and watching the grasshoppers seize control, they returned upon Dot's persuasion. During the climax, while the mechanical bird initially fooled Hopper, it was set on fire by P.T., leading to Flik's public beating. However, the ants and Circus Bugs united against the grasshoppers, driving them off except for Hopper and his brother Molt.

Flik traveled to 'the city,' a heap of trash under a trailer, where he mistook the jobless troupe for warriors. The bugs, thinking Flik was an agent, agreed to travel back to Ant Island. During their arrival ceremony, they discovered the deception but stayed after rescuing Dot from a bird. As Hopper demanded double the food offering, Flik constructed a fake bird to scare the grasshoppers. When P.T. Flea exposed them as circus performers, the bugs and Flik left, leaving the ants vulnerable. Hopper returned, took over the island, and planned to execute the Queen. Overhearing this from a grasshopper, Dot convinced the troupe to return. After distracting the grasshoppers to rescue the Queen, Flik deployed the bird. It worked until P.T., fooled as well, set it ablaze. Hopper beat Flik publicly, but Flik's assertion that the ants were capable inspired a rebellion. The Circus Bugs helped drive off the grasshoppers, and in the chaos, Hopper was lured to a real bird's nest and fed to chicks. Following the victory, P.T. began a new tour with Molt as a strongman and several ants as acrobats.
