Nemo's story begins on the Great Barrier Reef, where tragedy strikes when a barracuda knocks his father unconscious and kills his mother and siblings. Marlin names the surviving egg Nemo and vows to keep him safe, leading to years of hyperprotection that stifles Nemo's desire for independence. During a school field trip to the 'drop-off,' Nemo swims toward a nearby speedboat to prove himself, only to be captured by two scuba divers. He is placed in a dentist's fish tank in Sydney, joining the 'Tank Gang' led by Gill, which includes Peach, Deb, Gurgle, Bloat, Bubbles, and Jacques. The group learns that the dentist intends to gift Nemo to his niece Darla, who has a history of killing pets. To prevent this, Gill devises an escape plan requiring Nemo to clog the filter with his small size. After a failed escape attempt where he is nearly crushed by machinery, Nemo regroups. When Nigel the pelican arrives to tell him of Marlin's efforts, Nemo successfully clogs the tank filter again. However, the plan is foiled when the dentist cleans the tank and upgrades the filtration system while the fish are asleep. Later, as Darla prepares to take him home, Nemo plays dead, causing the terrified dentist to drop his bag into the harbour. Gill helps him escape down a drain just before Marlin arrives. Believing Nemo is dead after seeing him motionless in the net of a fishing trawler, Marlin leaves until Dory finds him. Nemo then persuades Marlin to trust him as he leads a school of groupers into the trawler's net, breaking it from the inside and freeing Dory. Weeks later, Nemo returns to school with renewed confidence, sharing a warm hug with his father before being told to 'go have an adventure.'
