Sully is introduced in the 2001 film *Monsters, Inc.* as the top scarer at Monsters, Incorporated, a company that powers Monstropolis by collecting the screams of human children. He and his best friend Mike Wazowski work together on the scare floor, using portal doors to enter children's bedrooms. One evening, a little girl named "Boo" accidentally enters the monster world, and Sully must hide her from the authorities and return her home. In the process, he discovers that laughter generates more energy than screams, leading to a fundamental change in how the company operates. The prequel *Monsters University* (2013) shows Sully and Mike's backstory: they meet at college as enemies but end up on the same team in the university's "Scare Games," where they learn to work together and become best friends. In the sequel series *Monsters at Work*, set the day after Monsters, Incorporated switches to laugh power, Sully and Mike work on the Laugh Floor alongside new employee Tylor Tuskmon.
